1 Januari - De nieuwe gemeente Zaanstad wordt gevormd. De gemeenten Zaandam, Koog
aan de Zaan, Zaandijk, Wormerveer, Krommenie, Assendelft en Westzaan houden hiermee
op te bestaan als zelfstandige gemeente.
3 Maart - Een Turkse DC-10 stort neer op 39 kilometer van Parijs (346 doden).
25 April - begin van de anjerrevolutie in Portugal.
29 Mei - Feyenoord wint als eerste Nederlandse voetbalclub de UEFA-Cup. De tegenstander
in de finale was het Londense Tottenham Hotspur. Uit in Londen speelde Feyenoord door
doelpunten van Wim van Hanegem en Theo de Jong met 2-2 gelijk maar thuis in de Kuip werd
het karwei keurig afgemaakt door met 2-0 te winnen. Wim Rijsbergen en Ressel scoorden.
7 Juni - Het Nederlandse team verliest de finale van het WK voetbal in (en van) Duitsland
met 1-2 ondanks een score door middel van een penalty in de eerste minuut.
15 Juli - De Grieks-Cypriotische guerillabeweging, die streeft naar aansluiting van Cyprus bij
Griekenland (enosis), pleegt een staatsgreep tegen president-aartsbisschop Makarios, die op
het nippertje weet te ontkomen. Turkije reageert onmiddellijk met een invasie op het noordelijk
gedeelte van het eiland ter bescherming van het Turkse deel van de bevolking.
23 Juli - Na een ballingschap van 11 jaar komt de Griekse ex-premier Konstantios Karamanlis
terug in Athene, waarmee een definitief einde komt aan het kolonelsregime. Ook beroemde
ballingen zoals componist Mikis Theodorakis, de actrice Melina Mercouri en de politicus
Andreas Papandreo keren weer naar Griekenland terug.
8 Augustus - De Amerikaanse president Richard Nixon verschijnt op TV en verklaart "... en
daarom zal ik morgenmiddag aftreden als president". Dit was meteen de ultieme consequentie
van het bekende Watergateschandaal.
13 Augustus - Wapenstilstandsovereenkomst op Cyprus, waarbij Turkije het bestuur over
eenderde van het eiland behoudt.
31 Augustus - De populaire zeezenders Radio Veronica en Radio Noordzee maken vandaag
hun laatste programma. Per 1 september gaat een nieuwe wet van kracht die uitzenden vanaf
zee verbiedt. De Belgische zeezender Radio Mi Amigo gaat wel door met uitzenden en doet
dat met in Spanje opgenomen programma's.
31 December - De laatste kolenmijn van Nederland, De Oranje-Nassau 1 in Heerlen,
