1936. In the beginning of this century this was the shoe manufactury of Joh.
Stoel. After him came J. Schilperoort as baker-grocer. With a wheelbarrow he
delivered his bread to his customers, through the churchlanes even to
Looperskapelle. P.L. Bastiaanse was from 1935 to 1942 also baker-grocer in
this house. He is standing in front of the shop-entrance, the next entrance near
the window of the shop was the entrance to the bakery with woodoven. The
enlargement was the shed to store the wood. In the next building lived the
farmer/flax-worker P. van Westervoort. Bastiaanse was very well known as
writer of poems and mottos in the newspaper of Zierikzee and other
newspapers. Also the aphorism at the pumping station "Prommelsluis" was
from his hand. Translated: "Someone else build me, By me someone els is
building, The meaning of my existence, Is determined by my opponent." After
his departure to Moriaanshoofd, where he had a bakershop untill 1946, he was
followed up by M. van den Houten, the last warm baker of Elkerzee. The
buildings disappeared in the flood disaster of 1953. Till 1953 Bastiaanse was
grocer in Brouwershaven and untill his dead postman.Back to the start page
