Veel weet ik nog niet van deze Henricus, maar hij heeft wel schilderijen gemaakt waarvan
ik afbeeldingen heb gevonden.

















Dit schilderij genaamd "The Exploring Party Coming upon an Encampment of Natives
1861?" is sinds November 1998 in eigendom van de National Library of Australia in de
Pictorial Collection te Melbourne, Australië.
Het is een olieschilderij op canvas.
Het schilderij laat een denkbeeldige ontmoeting met een groep Aboriginals zien tijdens de
huiveringwekkende Burke en Wills expeditie van 1860 tot 1861.
Het was één van de grote avonturen in de Australische geschiedenis.
De expeditie was een poging om de eerste oversteek van zuid naar noord Australië te maken.
De leiders van de expeditie kunnen geïdentificeerd worden als: George Landells - de tweede
in leiding - op de voorste kameel, en naast hem, John Wills, die tijdens de tocht overleed en
van wie het National Library het laatste dagboek in bezit heeft.
Robert Burke, die ook overleed, rijd op een grijs paard.
Het schilderij geeft een eigentijds beeld van de Burke en Wills expeditie, waar de heren
Burke en Wills, als ze het hadden overleefd, veel eer en glory van hadden genoten.
Aangenomen wordt dat het schilderij in 1861 werd gemaakt voordat men wist van de
tragische afloop.
Van den Houten's werk completeert de manuscripts, plattegronden en de vele geïllustreerde
artikelen van de huiveringwekkende Burke en Wills expeditie die de National Library reeds
in bezit heeft.

The Exploring Party Coming upon an Encampment of Natives 1861?

As reported in the December issue of Gateways, this historical painting was acquired by the
National Library in Melbourne in November 1998. It depicts an imaginary encounter with a
group of Aborigines on the ill-fated Burke and Wills’ expedition of 1860-61. One of the great
epic adventures in Australian history, the expedition was an attempt to make the first crossing
of Australia from south to north. The leaders of the expedition can be identified as: George
Landells-the second in command-on the foremost camel and, next to him, John Wills, who
died on the journey and whose final diary is held by the National Library. Robert Burke, who
also died, rides on a grey horse. One of several contemporary views of the Burke and Wills
expedition, this painting is infused with the promise of national glory and legend that neither
Burke nor Wills lived to enjoy. It is likely that the painting was completed by 1861, before
the tragic outcome of the expedition was known.
Van den Houten’s work complements the manuscripts, maps and numerous other pictorial
items relating to Burke and Wills’ ill-fated expedition already held by the National Library.
